Fasting Weight Loss
The history of fasting is ancient, with numerous references to the practice in the Bible. Moses is said to have gone without food for 40 days before receiving the tablets containing the 10 Commandments, and the New Testament describes Jesus being tempted by the devil at the end of lengthy fast. In modern times, however, fasting has gained popularity as a method of weight loss. The practice remains controversial, however, with some making it as the centerpiece of a weight loss, while others questioning its effectiveness and even its safety. Fasting is a serious approach to weight loss and requires knowledge and preparation.
Fasting Diet
Lengthy periods of fasting have shown some positive effects on human health. For example, one study found that fasting every other day may lengthen life span and reduce swelling caused by disease. Other recent studies on mice found that certain kinds of fasting had positive effects on insulin and blood sugar. As for weight loss, research using mice also found that diets mixing periods of fasting and non-fasting were more effective than diets that steadily restricted food.
Advocates of fasting as a means of weight loss say that the process clears the body of toxins, both from foods and the environment.
Water Fasting
Water fasting is the most draconian form of fasting, in which the entire diet is restricted to only water. Advocates contend that the human body is made to stop eating at times, such as during illnesses.
Digesting food requires much energy from the body, so in times of serious illness it shuts down the craving for food and often purges it from the body. The philosophy behind water fasting is to give the body the opportunity to devote full attention to restoration and healing.
Fasting, of course, isn't for everyone, and even its advocates advise certain people against it, such as those who are anorexic or bulimic, nursing mothers and pregnant, diabetic women.
Juice Fasting
Juice fasting is a popular detoxification diet during which only the juices of fruits and vegetables are consumed. Because these juices contain only highly digestible carbohydrates, the digestive system doesn't have to work very hard, freeing up the body's energy for other matters. Juices are derived from a wide variety of sources, which includes:
- Fruits: Such as Apples and Acai Berries
- Herbs: including Spearmint and Ginger
- Wheatgrass Juice
- Vegetables from Leaves, Stalks and Roots
Because pure juice doesn't contain any fiber, those fasting often use an enema, herbal laxative or psyllium to maintain bowel movements. Some fasters have found Core Cleanse beneficial because it cleans the colon and is available as a free trial.
Safe Fasting
Once you've decided that fasting is the best method of weight loss for you, you should understand what your body needs during this period. After the first several days of fasting, the body should go into a state of ketosis, in which you begin to burn stored fatty acids instead of glucose from foods you've eaten. This burns your body's fat. To help maintain the proper state of ketosis, it's advisable to consume supplements, especially those designed for fasting. One effective weight loss supplement is Keto XS, which provides exogenous ketones that can help prevent the dreaded "keto flu".
